Where have all the locals gone?
Summertime travelers have left local business in a lull.
This has been a summer much different than what we have seen in the last couple of years. Due to the drought conditions the last few summers have seen a hiatus in waterway usage. The low lakes and rivers have made it less than ideal to pack up the kids and hang by the water for the day. As this has hampered our local lifestyle the businesses in town have had a nice boost in business. People have been hanging around and taking advantage of all that is going on in town. From fine dining to window shopping there is much to see and do.
This summer has presented quite a change for the community. As the winter rains proved to be prolific outdoor activities have made their resurgence. Between the high flowing rivers and the lakes leveling the locals have hit the water. As the weekend rolls around people are grabbing sandwiches and ice chests and are on their way out to the water. For a few years we have been deprived of our favorite summer time traditions and have had to find fun elsewhere. Now that we have been blessed with rains we taking advantage of all the waterway activities. Although this brings joy and happiness to many, the local business are taking the hit. The boost in business over the last few summers have left local business accustomed to larger crowd. With everyone out on the water this year the lull is real.
As back to school has already hit for some and others it’s right around the corner the locals have returned. Back to the weekly routines of school, work, grocery shopping and finally back out to the restaurants and business that sustain our daily life. It has been a great summer and we’re all happy to see the locals back in town!

Preparing for fire in Nevada County
Are you ready if a wildfire hits?
Wild fire is all too familiar in our area and around the country this time of year. Are you prepared in case of an emergency? I can honestly say until last year I was not. I live in Alta Sierra. We are a sub division, so I am safe from that threat of wild fire right?
Not the case, Alta Sierra is extremely susceptible to wild fire. With the only 4 primary ways in and out of this subdivision of over 3,000 homes it will be a mad dash to escape a fast moving fire.
Almost 2 years ago I was home cleaning and kept hearing the fire planes flying over my house. We seem to hear them a lot as they head to fires in our special place in Nevada County. At first I thought nothing of it, then 20…30…40 minutess went by. The planes were still sounding very close so I headed onto my deck to see where they were headed. All I could see was a huge plume of smoke. I quickly jumped online to check a wonderful resource we have called
Yubanet. The information stated a fire on Dog Bar Rd. Hmmmmmm that is just a mile or so away. So I grabbed my shoes, phone, purse, wallet and headed to my car, alerting my husband that I was headed out to see where this fire was. As I made my way through Alta Sierra the smoke was so close. I made it to an area I knew I could see. There it was – a forest fire running uphill into the back of Alta Sierra. Planes, helicopters and ground crews working the fire. but the threat was closer than was comfortable to me.
Word spread quickly. My sister works in Emergency Preparedness for the State of California and called to tell us she was headed up to help if we needed it. My mind said we had plenty of time as the fire had a few miles and a golf course to get across before hitting my house. I remember my sister telling me prepare to get out before it is too late. So I ran home and started to gather things. As I rushed around telling my kids to grab a few outfits and stuffed animals I realized I had no idea what to take.
Thankfully my sister was sending me texts and they read. Take only what you need.
- A few days of clothes
- Pets, pet food etc
- Pictures
- Computers with important files and digital pics
More importantly she said to walk around our house and take pictures of every room from several angels, open cabinets and take pictures of the contents inside, then outside the home, in the garage and all around our home. Then the last thing she said was “if you can replace at the store ie Target, KMart etc. Don’t take it”. I told my kids this and suddenly most of the things we wanted to take didn’t matter… it was stuff and could be replaced. We wanted pictures, jewelry, kids artwork all those items that you can not replace.
So I empower you all to take a few minutes use resources like http://www.readyforwildfire.org/Wildfire-Action-Plan/ and put a plan together with your family.
I have lived in Alta Sierra most of my life and we have not had a wildfire that seriously threatened the development, but it’s smart to be safe rather than sorry.

Adventures in Nevada County Camping!
I was raised in Grass Valley but my family didn’t take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities for Nevada County camping so I have taken it on to discover these local jewels for myself.
My cousin and aunt wanted to have a family camping trip so I did some research. My cousin and I both have young children, and though we love camping, we are a little rusty at it. We wanted to choose a campsite that was close enough to home, so if we forgot anything really important, we could go back to get it if needed. We also needed a site that would be child friendly.
Our Local Choice
I called around and found Orchard Springs Campground in Chicago Park, right between Colfax and Grass Valley. It sits right next to Rollins Lake.
They were a little hard to get a hold of because they’re not set up for online reservations at this time and they only have one phone line in. However, when I arrived to look at the camp site, Keith, one of the employees of the site, was so knowledgeable and helpful. He gave me great advice about which sites I might want to choose. We ended up choosing a site just a short walk from the bathrooms with flushing toilets and coin operated showers (because we have small children) and a trail that lead right down to the day use area of Rollins Lake for swimming, fishing and beach fun.
The camp sites and facilities were so clean and kept up. Each camp site was equipped with a metal fire pit ring, grill, picnic table, and at least one parking space. There was also a fairly level spot to set up your tent.
The kids had so much fun and made some new friends from just a couple campsites over. We went fishing, swimming, kayaking, hiking, roasted hotdogs and s’mores over the campfire and just got to sit
around and enjoy each other’s company.
This was a great little mini vacation. I do like the more remote camping, but with young kids, busier campsites seem to work better for us. I would love to go back again some time.
